Passion
Sun Odyssey 37 performance
We love our Jeanneau SO37 "Passion" but even with a 160% genoa and large roach mainsail we could not be competetive in races under 20 knots.
After much evaluation of options including looking aboard some new models we decided to upgrade the rig on Passion to be a bit larger than a Sun Fast 37.
A deciding factor was that the cost of the project was considerably less than adding the options to a new yacht equivalent to what we already have on board our 2006 SO37.
The new rig mast is 1.7 m taller and the boom is 0.54m longer than the original SO37 rig.
The new measurements are
I 14.15m
J 3.86 m
P 13.6m
E 4.8m
The foretriangle is the same as the Sun Fast 37 while the mainsail is 0.4 m taller and we have fitted a mast head spinnaker offtake.
The rig is not as powerful as a First 36.7 but gives us sail area to displacement numbers similar to the Elan 37 and Solana 37.
The yacht is no longer a SO37 so I have described it as a SO37 Performance.
The new rig from Allyacht Spars Australia comes with lots of goodies like Hamma standing rigging,
Spectra halyards, a solid vang and end boom sheeting with a central cockpit mounted 16:1 fine tune.
We have maintained equal or better quality to the original Jeanneau supply and I have come to respect their design expertise and the quality of the yacht construction
as we have explored the options and evaluated safety factors.
The project has taken under three months from first thoughts to final completion and has been suprisingly economical. We had Ben Gemmel a local sailmaker
add an extra 1.7m to the foot of the existing perfectly good North main and that saved the cost of a new main. All the genoas fit in the foretriangle with a short strop
on the head including the nice blade jib from Gemmel Sails you can see in the photos . The Facor furler was given an overhaul and all the rig is now better than new.
Everyone we asked for advice or sought some part to convert some existing gear has been most helpful including Facnor who air freighted a part from Europe the day
before the airports were closed due to the Iceland Volcanic eruption.
Our first sail was on Wednesday 21st April and one of the crew took the attached photos from the dinghy in the middle of the Parramatta River upstream from Sydney Harbour.
On the first sail the boat was as well balanced as before and appeared to sail much closer to the wind.
